How do you use social media? Is it to communicate, read articles, share information, to learn? To share opinion, pictures, videos? Any of these or others, we cannot deny that social media has changed our lives, positively and negatively. It is a part of our daily lives and it is estimated and that there are 3.80 social media users worldwide and is increasing rapidly according to wearesocial.com. However, with hundreds of social media platforms out there, how will we know what suits us?

Below are my top 5 most useful social media picks.

  1. Facebook- launched in 2004 for Harvard by then Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg and three others. It is a platform that enables user to sign up and create a free account for connecting with other people, sharing pictures, videos, activities. Users send friend requests to people they want to connect with. Facebook users can also join user groups based on workplace, college or school, like pages of different kinds and can also shop. With roughly 2.8 billion monthly users on 2020, Facebook is the biggest social media network worldwide.

2. Instagram- was acquired by Facebook in 2012, has become a part of everyday life with over a billion registered users. Everything seems to be on Instagram today, from small to large companies, celebrities. The platform is designed almost entirely around sharing photos and videos, instead of words. This visual twist is why Instagram is today’s cultural powerhouse making “Instagramming” now an official verb. One of the things I like on Instagram is that you can filter out who can see your account and who can follow you.

3. Linked in- the largest professional networking platform in the world. It is also one of the most influential social media networks with more than 575 million members in 2018. Members use the site to keep in touch with business associates, clients and colleagues. You can use LinkedIn to find the right job or internship, connect and strengthen your working relationships and learn skills you need to do well in your professional life.

4. Pinterest- a social network that enables users to visually share and discover new interests by pinning (posting) images or videos to their own or other boards. As with most other social networks, people can perform typical social networking function, such as following their friends, liking and commenting on the boards of other users, and re-pinning content on their own boards. Pinterest has registered more than 320 million monthly active users worldwide, and is the third largest internet social network.

5. Youtube- has rapidly been the number one online video entertainment destination since it was first launched in 2005, attracting over one billion monthly users. The Google-owned website has gained prominence by allowing people all over the world to share their videos with others.

All in all, social media touches many diverse areas, from personal to professional, to collaboration to politics, news and many more and how it affects the users depends on how the users utilize these.
